Country Forgotten: A life on the interstate.
Hobbling alongside another line of traffic on the off-ramp of interstate 40, Country occasionally raises to his head to see if anyone has rolled down their window to offer him anything of substance. “You can never say, some days I’ll only make $5 and then another day, $100,” said Country. He keeps some of his possessions next to the guardrail, including his closest companion “Baby,” the dog he was given by a local veterinarian clinic.
Country through her car window. “I’ve had salmonella seven times from eating this stuff,” said Country, “you never know when the food’s cold.”
What can you do? Next time you see a “Country” on your way home from work, stop to say hello. Offer him/her a piece of fruit or a sandwich. Don’t have anything with you? Stop at a nearby gas station, pick something up, and go back to extend an offer of kindness. You might even make a new friend!
