The Next Generation Haitian

Through forced slavery, French occupation, and U.S. occupation, Haiti was a country that, according to much of the world… was never meant to be. Yet, they unified to defend their freedom and fought for the generations that would follow. Today, half of the population of Haiti is under the age of 21, and they carry on this torch of hope and resilience that was lit from generations past.

Today’s Hatian youth stand as a beacon of light in the midst of the darkness and destitution left from the earthquake of January 12. They inject joy and hope into a condition many have deemed immutable. Even in the midst of living in temporary tent communities, the children refuse to let go of the normal joys of life, like jumping rope and playing tag. The sounds of laughter echo through the tent communities as a reminder to us all that though we may have little control over what happens to us, we have 100% control over how we choose to respond.
